Can I make XP scan for USB devices?

I have two external harddrives, a printer and some memory sticks connected to my notebook via a hub. It will usually not detect any of this. Removing the USB-cable will work every once in a while, but isn't there a software-way to make XP scan for and detect USB-devices? Best regards...
