Part 3 of a special fall TV preview: CW

The fall TV season is upon us, and we’re doing a special series here on Congoo this week and next week, focusing on the new fall shows. Today it’s the CW, one of my very favorite networks.   So why is the CW one of my very favorite networks, you might ask? There’s really just one big reason, and it’s really just one big word. “Smallville.” Very few times in one’s life is there a TV show that keeps you motionless and rapt through every moment (veritably foaming at the mouth when the scene-chewing Michael Rosenbaum enters), a show that makes you yell and scream and rant and rave around the house when the 60 minutes are up. But that’s “Smallville,” at least for this viewer! And the creative crew (which includes a couple comic-book types, by the way) just keeps flying in the thrills and chills, season after season. This Superman story, originally centering around a teenage Clark Kent, has introduced, in careful stages, the popular characters Lois Lane, Jimmy Olson, even a younger and washed-out Perry White. Last season, they really upped the ante by assembling the beginnings of the Justice League – Flash, Green Arrow, Aquaman and Cyborg, each introduced in their own episodes then brought together for a mind-blowing team episode. Plus, a grippingly cool Martian Manhunter and, at last season’s end, our first glimpse of Bizarro. Now this season, it’s (GASP!) Supergirl! Yes, Supergirl! We can hardly wait! If they ever actually produce the rumored young Bruce Wayne, I’m really gonna have to start taking heart medicine! Clark busts the heck out of the latest large-scale catastrophe at 8 p.m. EST next Thursday, September 27.   Also worth a look on the CW is the newbie “Reaper,” starring the accomplished Ray Wise of “Twin Peaks” fame. Wise plays the devil in this drama, which premieres at 9 p.m. EST on Tuesday, September 25. “Gossip Girl” is also being heavily touted. This drama, which premiered on Wednesday, focuses on a secretive gossip columnist whose identity no one knows but whom everyone relies on for the latest news. It stars Blake Lively, whose whole family has been in the biz at one time or another – for instance, her father Ernie Lively and brother Jason Lively did roles on “The Dukes of Hazzard” in the ‘80s, and her sister Robyn Lively was the redhead of the trio of girlfriends on the WB’s short-lived “Savannah” in the ‘90s.
