Do You Care Who Runs GlaxoSmithKline?

WSJ's Health Blog recent ran a poll asking readers whom they suspect will be at GSK's helm.

The results thus far showed that 48-year old Chris Viehbacher has the lead at 32% (127 votes out of total 391) given his leadership through the Avandia mess. Not only does Chris hold dual citizenship, he is multilingual and has experience running the EU and US business units.

But I think it's telling that 11% of the votes are for "no idea/don't care".

Pharmaceutical companies have grown so big through mergers that pretty soon we'll need to use simple acronyms instead of trying to remember all the component companies that were gobbled up and assimilated into the hegemonic entity that today's pharma companies are. Or maybe companies can learn from Pfizer, through which companies small and large pass through and are never heard about again, at least by their original names, for they have been completely integrated into the Pfizer mothership.

Eventually who ever is at the helm will just look like anyone else who is at the helm. This industry is famous for inbreeding.
