| Pharma Nice Place to Work If Not Field-Based |
| |
Big pharma has always been touted as a great place to work, especially its "family-friendliness". WSJ's Health Blog today, for example, lists examples of an attractive big pharma work place to include flexible work schedules and paid paternity leaves.
Those of us who have worked in the field in big pharma (and small pharma and mid-sized pharma for that matter) know very well that such "perks" of the big pharma workstyle are available only to "traditional" office workers - a.k.a. those who clock in hours at the corporate HQ. Field-based workers including sales and medical science liaison professionals are not privvy to benefits like muffin Fridays, on-site dry-cleaning service, award-winning childcare, or high tech fitness facilities. Field-based workers may have "flexible" schedules, but what this really means is that you exchange weekday flexible hours for a lot of uncompensated overtime work in the evenings and on the weekends. It's nice not to have to punch a time card every weekday, but it's nice to know you get to be home at a predictable time each weekday, too.
