Qualities of Great Bosses

Leigh Buchanan’s “The Office: Good to Great - The habits of highly successful bosses” goes beyond a clever wordplay on Jim Collins’ and Stephen Covey’s books to list qualities of universally great bosses. These qualities (that Leigh’s article expands upon) include:

  • Great bosses get the small picture and know employees often focus locally.
  • Great bosses make people feel smart.
  • Great bosses know who does what so they can recognize individual employees.
  • Great bosses know when they’re not wanted and delegate.
  • Great bosses remember details about their people.

Do you agree with these qualities? What other qualities should be in this list?

Great bosses dont micro manage, they do keep a mindful eye on projects and ask how things are going. This is a balancing act that takes many years to get right.
