| Travel Often? Invest in Noise Reduction Earphones |
| |
A few years ago when I had a particularly grueling business travel schedule, at one point while in the Philly airport, I suddenly felt as if I couldn't catch my breath. The noise and the crowds and airport hustle and bustle seemed to close in.
I went into a Bose store and spent $300 on noise reduction headphones. I put them on immediately and was amazed at the difference that reducing even a bit of noise had on the state of my mental health. I kept them on while waiting and left them on for the duration of the flight. I wished I had bought them years earlier.
Recently, Reuters reported on a Swedish study that suggests a correlation between airport noise and risk of high blood pressure due to noise pollution. The constant excretion of engine noise and planes buzzing overhead may create chronic stress, which then may lead to increased blood pressure. Although the study involved only men, I'm sure that women may be negatively affected by noise pollution, at least from my personal experience as a former road warrior. It wasn't until I got my headphones that I realized how much "regular cabin and engine noise" from flying fatigued me as much as the pressurized cabin air did.
